Frication of /k/ and /p/ in Australian English: Inter - and Intra-Speaker Variation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Frication of stops occurs when a phonemic stop is produced with incomplete closure such that it is effectively reduced to a fricative. This is a typical connected speech process in dialects of British English, and has also been observed in Australian English. The present study examines patterns of frication of the voiceless stops /k/ and /p/ in Australian English produced by a group of male speakers from Melbourne. Acoustic analysis of spontaneous speech shows that frication of /k/ and /p/ occurs to a significant extent in Australian English, and that this behaviour also exhibits systematic speakerspecific variation.

Speaker-Specific Patterns of Frication of Voiceless Stops in Au
The present study examines speaker variability in patterns of frication of the voiceless stops /k/ and /p/ in Australian English. The study was prompted by initial auditory analyses of spontaneous speech data in which fricative realisations of /k/ and /p/ appeared to occur to varying extents for different speakers. Although speakerrelated variability in the distribution of different realisation...
متن کاملVoice morphing and the manipulation of intra-speaker and cross-speaker phonetic variation to create foreign accent continua: a perceptual study
The STRAIGHT system of voice morphing was used to create voice continua of (Korean) accented Australian English, intended to simulate phonetic variation ranging from ‘heavily accented’ to ‘unaccented’ (native-like) Australian English, employing dimensions of intra-speaker and cross-speaker variation to yield a range of synthetic voices. These synthetic voices were evaluated against actual sampl...
متن کاملFront Vowels as Speaker-Specific: Some Evidence from Australian English
This investigation focuses on the degree of speaker-specificity in F2 and F3 of eleven Australian English monophthongs, determined using F-ratios from single-factor ANOVA. Non-contemporaneous samples of spontaneous speech produced by eight male speakers (four twin pairs) of Australian English were analysed, with the results indicating that the front vowels, and close-front vowels in particular,...
متن کاملComparative Analysis of Intra-and Inter Populational Heterogeneity of the Essential Oils in White Savory Plants
White savory(Satureja mutica Fisch & C.A.Mey.) is one of the most widely used medicinal plants in food processing, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry due to the strongly scented and presence of phenolic compounds such as carvacrol and thymol. This experiment was carried out to evaluate the levels of inter and intra-populations variability of essential oil compositions of S. mutica grown in no...
متن کاملA Genre-Based Investigation of Inter/Intra-Lingual Relationships between Persian and English Academic Writings: Common Underlying Proficiency Oriented
Although L2 writing has attracted salient attention and monopolized many studies in EFL contexts, there is still no full image of its complicated nature. Trying to play a supplementary role in achieving that image, this study aimed at finding whether Persian and English argumentative and descriptive academic writings were inter/intra-lingually associated and if genre played a role in p...
